Course Text Begins Here:

Dear Ones,

How should we approach Yom Kippur? Here is how we should approach Yom Kippur.

When we fail, we should immediately take action to seek forgiveness. We should close each day by reflecting on our actions and seek repentance for any misdeeds. We should do the same at weeks end and on each Rosh Chodesh / New Month.  During the Month of Elul, we turn our attention towards the coming Day of Judgment on Rosh HaShanah. During the Ten Days of between Rosh Ha Shanah and Yom Kippur, we seek forgiveness of our failings. On Yom Kippur, we plead for forgiveness of our sins.

The good news is that the Lord God is forgiving. Still, we need to do our part. There are six Observances mentioned between Leviticus 23.27 - 32.

Vayikra 23.27

Leviticus 23.27 - 28

Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement; it shall be a holy gathering to you; and you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the Lord.

ONE: On The Tenth Day of The Seventh Month

The Observances for Yom Kippur are time-related. They must be Observed beginning eighteen minutes before sundown in one area on the Tenth Day of The Seventh Month. The Observances must continue through the entire night and day until after nightfall on the Eleventh.

TWO: You shall afflict your Souls, i.e. fast.

The fast on Yom Kippur is a 26 Hour Fast. Young children should not fast. Nursing mothers should not fast. Individuals requiring medicine should not fast.

How does one fast? We do not eat or drink anything for 26 hours. This may seem challenging. This is how The People of Israel have fasted for thousands of years. The Mitzvah is, 'You shall afflict your soul.' Fasting is a way to a afflict one's soul. Removing soft cushions from chairs is another way to affect one's soul.

Other forms of afflicting ones are not washing one's face, not bathing or showering, combing one's hair, using deodorant, perfume, makeup, cologne, not rinsing one's mouth, brushing one's teeth, not washing one's hands except the fingertips. This does not include changing a dirty diaper. Using common sense is important. One should not wear leather shoes. Marital relations are suspended for the day of atonement.

THREE: Offer an offering made by fire to the Lord.

This Mitzvah is discussed in greater detail in Numbers 29.7 - 11

Numbers 29.8- 11

You shall offer a burnt offering to the Lord for a sweet savor; one young bull, one ram, and seven one-year-old lambs without blemish. And their meal offering shall be of fine flour mixed with oil, [[as prescribed] Three-Tenth [of an ephah] measure for the bull, and Two -Tenths [of an ephah]  measure for the ram, and-and A Tenth [of an ephah] measure for each of the Seven lambs. [You shall offer] a young male goat for a sin offering; in addition to the [special] Atonement sin offering [of Yom Kippur] , [in addition you shall offer] the continual burnt offering [in the morning] , and it's meal offering and the drink offerings.

Today we do not have a Holy Temple. We do not offer these animals, grain or drink on Yom Kippur as it was done in the past. Instead, we offer songs of praise. When the Third Temple and worship are restored, sacrifices will return.

The Gematria of יוֹם הַכִּפֻּרִים   Yom Kippur is 411. The Gematria of  טֹבֹת meaning good or pleasant is 411.  The Day of Atoning is intended to be good for us.

Leviticus 23.29

For whatever soul it is that does not become afflicted in that same Day, he shall be cut off from among his people.

FOUR: Affliction

Dear ones, The observances of This Day are so serious that one must be careful not to neglect afflicting themselves.  If one were to fail to afflict themselves, they will be cut off from among The People of Israel and will die prematurely without children. Again, I mentioned before how one may I afflict themselve.

Leviticus 23.30 - 31

And whatever soul it is who does any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people. You shall do no kind of work; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

FIVE: It is forbidden to work on Yom Kippur

Yom Kippur is a High Holy Day. All the Shabbat prohibitions apply on Yom Kippur.

You shall do no kind of work; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

Leviticus 23.32

It shall be to you A Sabbath of rest, and you shall afflict your souls; in the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, shall you celebrate your Sabbath.

SIX: Yom Kippur is Solemn Day of Rest

This means one is to be serious about the Day of Atonements yet not stress or worry about anything especially work. We need to concentrate on our appeals to HaShem. We must not allow distractions. We are to keep this unique balance. We must be very concerned for our past wrong deeds. We must seek forgiveness for our sins. Yet, we need balance.

Remember it was on this day that Moses came down from Mt Sinai with the second set of The Two Tablets of Stone symbolizing that The Lord God Had forgiven The people for the sin of the Golden Calf. Therefore The Tenth Day of?The Seventh Month became the Eternal Day for Forgiveness. So This means we must temper our insensitivity with confidence that The Lord God Will Forgive us.

May our 26 hours of fasting, afflicting our souls, seeking forgiveness, pouring out our hearts before HaShem and seeking pardon be successful.

Yom Kippur is The Day of ATONEMENTS! There are many Atonements we must seek for. The Lord God Provided us this Day of Atoning to be successful. We must be serious. We must not take this Day lightly! When we approach The Day Of Atoning correctly, we can have confidence. It other we may rest assured that The Lord God Will Forgive and Pardon.
